Protect your personal information this tax season!

Tax season is stressful enough without worrying about identity theft or fraud. Before you hand over sensitive details like your Social Security Number or bank account information, make sure you Know Your Advisor (K.Y.A.). Just like financial institutions following Know Your Customer (K.Y.C.) principles, you should apply similar caution when choosing who you trust with your taxes.

Why K.Y.A. Matters

Your tax advisor has access to some of your most confidential information. If they’re not reputable or properly credentialed, you could be putting yourself at risk for:

  • Identity theft
  • Fraudulent filings
  • Financial loss

Taking time to verify your advisor’s practices and credentials is one of the smartest moves you can make this season.

5 Steps to Know Your Advisor

  1. Verify Registration: The IRS requires paid tax preparers to register with a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Moreover, preparers who submit returns by E-File are required to have an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN).
  2. Check Credentials: Look for certifications like Annual Filing Season Participant (AFSP), Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA), Enrolled Agent (EA), or other recognized tax pro designations. These indicate your advisor meets strict standards.
  3. Ask About Security Practices: How do they store your data? Do they use encrypted systems? A trustworthy advisor will always have clear answers.
  4. Review Their Reputation: Search for reviews, complaints, or disciplinary actions. Transparency is key. If they hesitate to provide references, that is a red flag.
  5. Understand Their Process: Make sure you know how your information will be handled from start to finish. Avoid advisors who rush or pressure you.

Your Information, Your Responsibility

Remember: Sharing personal data is a big deal. Take the time to Know Your Advisor (K.Y.A.) before you share anything. A few minutes of research can save you from months of headaches.
